On the basis of type of material use for their construction, roads are classified into two types as mentioned below : (1) Metalled roads : These roads are made of cement concrete or even bitumen or coal tar. One can go fast on metalled roads. These are all weather roads. These are maintained by the government. (2) Unmetalled roads : These are not all weather roads. These are made of mud and gravel which are generally found in the rural areas. These are sometimes made even of sand and laid as extended roads. These may not be fit for use in rainy season. The unmetalled roads are maintained by common people. One cannot go fast on these roads.
