Gandhiji said during his trial in Motihari court that he would not leave Champaran for humanitarian reasons. He told the judge that humanity and obedience to conscience disobeyed the order. The judge requested Gandhiji to be released on bail, but he refused and asked for the verdict to be announced. The judge did not pass judgment for several days and Gandhi was released. However, the lieutenant governor dropped all charges against Gandhiji because there was no malicious evidence to show that Gandhiji intended to remain in Champaran.
