define atomic number?
The atomic number, or atomic number of a chemical element, is the number of electric charges in the nucleus. For normal atomic nuclei, this equals the number of protons, or the number of protons found in the nucleus of each atom of that element. Atomic numbers can be used to uniquely identify common chemical elements.
