Metals: Have a strong tendency to lose electrons to form cations.  Metals are strong reducing agents.  Metals have low ionization enthalpies.  Metals form basic oxides and ionic compounds. Non-Metals: Non-metals have a strong tendency to accept electrons to form anions. Non-metals are strong oxidizing agents.  Non-metals have high ionization enthalpies.  Non-metals form acidic oxides and covalent compounds.
