What is the G0 (quiescent phase) of the cell cycle?
Some cells in adult animals do not appear to exhibit division (e.g., heart cell, nerve cell). These cells become inactive and become specialized by differentiating and do not further exit the G1 phase, and enter a stage but divide occasionally called the quiescent stage (G0) of the cell cycle. A cell in this stage remains metabolically active but no longer proliferate unless called to do so depending on the requirement of the organism.
