When and why does a reduction in the number of chromosomes take place in meiosis?

The actual reduction in the number of chromosomes takes place in anaphase I. This is because in anaphase I, one member from each homologous pair moves to one pole; the two chromatids of the chromosomes do not separate as the centromeres do not divide at this stage.
