Describe the events in the prophase of animal cells.
Chromosomal material condenses to form compact mitotic chromosomes. Chromosomes are seen to be composed of two chromatids attached together at the centromere. The centrioles formed in interphase start moving to the opposite poles of the cell. Initiation of the assembly of the mitotic spindle, the microtubules, the proteinaceous components of the cell cytoplasm help in the process. By the end of the prophase, the nuclear membrane and nucleolus disappear.
