HCl is secreted by oxyntic cells in the stomach wall and performs five functions: Kill bacteria and germs Loosens fibrous material of food. Activates proenzyme pepsinogen to its active form pepsin. Gives an acidic medium for action by pepsin. Curdles milk.  Pepsin changes proteins into proteases and peptones
