Why are monosaccharide’s sugars known as reducing sugars?

Since monosaccharide’s sugar have a free aldehyde or ketone group and can reduce Cu2+to Cu+. They are known for reducing sugars. Since disaccharides, such as sucrose, do not reduce Cu2+ to Cu+, they are not reducing sugars.
