Enzymes are known as biological system catalysts because they speed up chemical reactions or their rates. Enzymes bind to the substrate, and the resulting ‘enzyme-substrate complex has lower activation energy, implying that the ‘amount of energy required to activate the chemical process is smaller, and thus the process is faster. The lower the activation energy, the faster the chemical reactions.
