The pressure-flow hypothesis is one of the most accepted mechanisms for the supply of sugars from the source (leaves or other photosynthetic parts) to the sink (other parts of the plant). The synthesis of glucose occurs at the source or in the leaves where it is converted into sucrose. The sucrose is first transferred to the companion cells of phloem and then to the sieve tubes using energy (active transport). The loading of sucrose at the site of the source creates a hypertonic situation in the phloem which is a vascular tissue of the plant.
