BOD in water is a measurement of the quantity of organic material in the water in terms of how much oxygen is required to break it down biologically. Clean water has a BOD value of less than 5 ppm5 ppm, whereas severely contaminated water has a BOD value of 17 ppm17 ppm or higher.
