The condition when there is not enough oxygen in the body to meet the energy requirements of the body, such a condition is called hypoxia. Hypoxia can be a life-threatening condition as oxygen acts as a substrate for aerobic reactions that take place inside the body to yield energy. In the absence of oxygen, such reactions can no longer work and can cease the metabolic activities. Hypoxia can develop by exposing into an atmosphere with low oxygen levels (high altitude), respiratory disorders, blockage of the upper respiratory tract, heart problems, edema (fluid retention), pneumonia, and other such problems. Hypoxia is a condition when the body lacks the required volume of oxygen to carry out metabolic reactions. The oxygen is an important substrate for aerobic reactions. The lack of oxygen in the body can be life-threatening. Hypoxia can be treated by providing the person with oxygen through the artificial source, and through other drugs that can cause vasoconstriction to increase blood supply to the tissues that need oxygen
