Red muscles are red in color due to the presence of a red pigment called as Myoglobin which stores oxygen in it. They function aerobically due to the presence of oxygen in it and also due to the large quantity of mitochondria in it, it is used for the ATP production in the muscle. White muscles are white or pale in color due to the very less amount of red pigment in it. It depends on the Anaerobic mode of respiration due to less quantity of mitochondria in it. They have a large amount of sarcoplasmic reticulum in the muscle.
