The brain is the chief controlling and coordinating center of the body and is divided into three major regions: forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain. The forebrain is further subdivided into three parts called cerebrum, thalamus, and hypothalamus. It is concerned with eating, sleeping, maintaining body temperature and reproductive functions. The midbrain is subdivided into cerebral peduncles and the corpora quadrigemina. It is associated with vision, hearing, sleep, alertness and temperature regulation. The hindbrain is composed of the medulla oblongata, the pons, and the cerebellum. It controls functions important for survival that is respiratory rhythm, motor activity, sleep, and wakefulness.
