The functions of the phylum, Chordata, consist of the presence of a notochord and coupled pharyngeal gill slits. In sub-phylum Vertebrata, the notochord found in embryos receives changed through a cartilaginous or bony vertebral column in adults. Thus, it could be stated that every one vertebrates are chordates however all chordates aren't vertebrates.
