Heartwood or duramen is the dark-coloured found wood approaching the centre of the axis formed after several years of secondary growth of the stem. A small exterior region still persists to be light coloured which is known as alburnum or sapwood. The heartwood takes form due to changes in the elements of the secondary xylem. The amount of heartwood rises as the tree grows older while the amount of sapwood almost remains constant.
