A common cause of bacterial pneumonia is Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus). However, clinicians are not always able to find out which germ caused someone to get sick with pneumonia. Community-acquired pneumonia is when someone develops pneumonia in the community (not in a hospital).
