What is adaptive radiation? Explain with an example.
Adaptive radiation is defined as an evolutionary process producing new species from a single, rapidly diversifying lineage. This process occurs due to natural selection. Example: Darwin finches, found in Galapagos Island. A variety of finches present in Galapagos Island arose from a single species, which reached this land accidentally. As a result, innumerable new species evolved, diverged, and adapted thus occupying new habitats. These finches developed diverse eating habits, and various kinds of beaks suiting their feeding habits.
