In the lanthanoids, from La(OH)3La(OH)3 to Lu(OH)3Lu(OH)3 , the basic strength of hydroxides drops. The size of M3 + M3 +  ions reduces as a result of lanthanoid contraction, and the covalent character of the M−OHM−OH bond increases.
