Although phenols are more powerful than alcohols, they are still rather weak acids. Because the phenoxide ion is more persistent than the alkoxide ion, phenol is more acidic than cyclohexanol and acyclic alcohols. The negative charge of an alkoxide ion, such as the one formed from cyclohexanol, is concentrated near the oxygen atom.
