Give one chemical test to distinguish between the following pairs of compounds: Methylamine and N, N-dimethylamine
N,N-dimethylamine is a secondary amine and methylamine is a primary amine and the only test used to distinguish between a primary and a secondary amine is the carbylamines test. Aliphatic and aromatic primary amines create foul-smelling isocyanides or carbylamines when heated with chloroform and ethanolic potassium hydroxide. The Carbylamine test is positive for methylamine (an aliphatic primary amine), but not for N,N-dimethylamine.
