Denaturation is a process in which proteins or nucleic acids lose their native forms by exposing them to an external strain or chemical, such as a tough acid or base, a concentrated inorganic salt, an organic solvent, radiation, or heat. When proteins in a live cell are denatured, the cell's functioning is disrupted, and the cell may die.
