Soaps with sodium salts are made by heating fat (the glycerol ester of a fatty acid) with an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. Soaps containing sodium and potassium are the only ones that are soluble in water and may be used for cleaning. Potassium soaps are gentler on the skin than sodium soaps.
