Ozone hole: During the period 1956-1970 the springtime O3 layer thickness above Antarctica varied from 280 to 325 Dobson unit. Thickness was sharply reduced to 225 DU in 1979 and 136 DU in 1985. Antarctic air is completely isolated from the rest of the world by the natural circulation of wind called the polar vortex. The decline in ozone layer thickness during that springtime is called ozone hole. It was first noted in 1985 over Antarctica. Effects of UV radiation on humans: In humans, the increase in UV radiation increases the incidence of cancer (including melanoma). Reduces the functioning of the immune system. The cornea absorbs UV-B radiations, and a high dose of UV-B causes inflammation of the cornea called snow blindness, cataract, etc. Exposure may permanently damage the cornea and cause blindness.
