Predators are of great importance as they play the following important roles in an ecosystem: They act as ‘conduits’ for energy transfer to higher trophic levels. They keep the prey population under control, which otherwise can reach very high population density and cause an imbalance in the ecosystem, They help in maintaining species diversity in a community by reducing the intensity of competition among the competing prey species.
