How are restriction endonuclease enzymes named? Write examples.
The naming of restriction enzymes is as follows: The first letter of the name comes from the genus and the next two letters from the name of the species of the prokaryotic cell from which they are isolated. The next letter comes from the strain of the prokaryote. The roman numbers following these four letters indicate the order in which the enzymes were isolated from that strain of the bacterium. Examples: EcoR I is isolated from Escherichia coli RY 13. Hind II is from Haemophilus influenza. Bam H I is from Bacillus amylotiquefaciens. Sal I is from Streptomyces Albus Pst I is from Providencia stuartii.
