Explain ‘addiction’ and dependence’ in respect of drug/alcohol abuse in youth.
Addiction is the psychological attachment to certain effects such as euphoria and a temporary feeling of well-being, associated with drugs and alcohol. The addicted person cannot manage him/herself without drug or alcohol. Dependence: Dependence is the tendency of the body to manifest a characteristic and unpleasant withdrawal syndrome on abrupt discontinuation of a regular dose of drug/alcohol.
