How does a chromosomal disorder differ from a Mendelian disorder?
Mendelian disorders are mainly determined by alteration or mutation in a single gene. These disorders are transmitted to the offspring on the basis of Mendelian inheritance, e.g. haemophilia, sickle cell anaemia. Chromosomal disorders are caused due to absence or excess or abnormal arrangement of one or more chromosomes. They are caused due to failure of segregation of chromatids during cell division or due to polyploidy. e.g. Down’s syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome.
