Why was an independent trade union so important for Poland?
In Poland, the trade unions were controlled by the ruling party, there could be no trade unions independent of the party. When the workers of the Lenin Shipyard in Gdansk went on strike, the strike was considered illegal because it was called by an independent group of workers and not an authorised trade union.
