Cost of a pen is two and half times the cost of a pencil. Express this situation as a linear equation in two variables.

Solution: Let cost of a pen be ₹ x and cost of a pencil be ₹ y. According to statement of the question, we have x = 5/2 y ⇒ 2x = 5y or 2x – 5y = 0
