The summer solstice, also known as estival solstice or midsummer, occurs when one of the Earth's poles (North pole) has its maximum tilt toward the Sun. The winter solstice, or hibernal solstice occurs when one of the Earth's poles (North Pole) has its maximum tilt away from the Sun.
