How would you choose between two characteristics to be used for developing a hierarchy in classification?
Structure and function are the two categories to be used for developing a hierarchy from one level to the next level. Eg. Arthropods have jointed appendages. On the other hand in arthropods, insects and spiders make separate groups having characteristics to define them. Hence we can select the general to specific characters for the hierarchy in classification.
