(a) What is a functional group in a carbon compound? Identify the functional group present in CH3COOH and C2H5OH. (b) State the principle on which the cleansing action of soap is based.
(a) An atom or group of atoms which makes an organic compound reactive and decides it's properties is called functional group. CH3COOH has carboxylic Acid, and C2H5OH has Alcohol functional group. (b)The cleansing action of soap is based on following principle. (1) Soap dissolves in water to form soap micelles. (2)Hydrophobic end of soap attracts dirt and grease. The hydrophillic end remains separated in water by the action of ion repulsion. (3) Clothes are rinsed. These micelle are washed with water.
