What happens chemically when quick lime is added to water?

Quick lime is chemically calcium oxide (CaO). When it is added to water filled in a bucket, it forms calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) which is slaked lime and reacts vigorously by releasing a large amount of heat which is an exothermic reaction.
