Option C. The opening and closing of stomata are essential for respiration as well as transpiration.  • The guard cells become turgid and swell in size as water enters them due to a difference in potential, which causes the opening of the stomata.  • As the solute declines, the water drains out of the guard cells, thus closing the stomata.   Hence, the guard cells play an important role in transpiration.
