Do earthquakes cause destruction every time they occur?
Some earthquakes are extremely destructive. A robust quake can topple buildings and bridges, trapping people underneath them. If gasoline pipes and electrical wires break, they can start fires that rage for several days. Earthquakes can also cause landslides and avalanches. The violent shaking of the Earth occasionally loosens chunks of snow or mud that slide down the slopes of mountains and hills, burying houses and people underneath them.
