The oldest known reptile was once hylonomus. It was around 25 centimetres (10 inches) long. Reptiles developed from amphibians, and the first authentic reptiles had a strong skull with holes solely for nose, eyes and a spinal cord. These early reptiles gave upward jab to another line known as synapsids, which had another pair of holes in their skulls at the back of the eyes. Synapsids developed into mammals.
