Why is the coelacanth called a living fossil?

The coelacanth is one of the earliest known fish that has survived till today. It grows to a duration of two metres (6.five feeet). Until a coelacanth turned into caught via way of means of a fisherman off the east coast of South Africa in 1938, it turned into idea to be extinct.
