Why did the Navajo paint sand?
The Navajo made lovely sand art work depicting their gods as a part of a healing ceremony. The art work had been carried out with coloured powder made from grinding stones and other items they discovered around them. They used 5 shades: white, black, red, yellow and blue. The colors have been dribbled directly to sand. The sand painters have been guided through the Navajo priests, known as shamans. The artwork had been finished at dawn and worn out on the end of the day.
