Platelets, additionally known as thrombocytes, are related to blood clotting.  Platelets don't have any nucleus: they may be fragments of cytoplasm, which can be derived from the megakaryocytes of the bone marrow.  These unactivated platelets are biconvex discoid structures.  They are smallest of the 3 important blood mobileular types. They make up a tiny part of the blood volume.
