Option D. The parietal pleura (connected to the chest wall) and the visceral pleura (connected to the lung) are in very near touch but “separated” through pleural fluid inside which there's a pressure this is much less than atmospheric pressure (i.e. negative). This manner that the lungs are caught to the chest wall and expand when it does.
