India is a agricultural country. More over 70% of rural population is depending on the agriculture. Peasant means the poor agricultural labour those have small land. During the Mughal Empire, peasants were very important to generate the land revenue though they are basically outsiders but cultivated the rented land or they hired by the zamindar. The word peasant does not exist but the agricultural labour does exist. They cultivated the land and grow the crops which was important for everyone's surviving. They are the backbone of economy of our country till today. For my understanding, peasant or agricultural labour is very important from Mughal to till today. But the gap between rich and poor in India has not changed as the poor agricultural labours don't have modern equipments or seeds and they remain seasonally unemployed.
