The Allahabad Column Engraving of Samudragupta depicts four types of rulers and enlightens us regarding Samudragupta's strategies towards them: The nine leaders of Aryavarta and their realms were made a part of Samudragupta's domain. The twelve leaders of Dakshinpatha (South India), who gave up to Samudragupta after being crushed, were freed and permitted to control again over their realms. The internal circle of adjoining states, including Assam, Seaside Bengal, Nepal, and various gana sanghas (association of numerous lords) in the north-west. brought accolade, followed his orders or proclamations, and went to his court. The leaders of the remote regions, who submitted to him and offered their girls in marriage. The Allahabad engraving, a prashasti (commendation) made by his retainer Harishena, credits him with broad military victories. It proposes that he crushed a few lords of northern India, and added their regions to his domain.
