With reference to the Mansabdari system, answer the following questions: (b) What was meant by zat and sawar rank?
Zat fixed the individual status in the court and the compensation based on his military ability. The higher the zat, the more lofty was the respectable's situation in court and the bigger his salary. The sawar rank demonstrated the number of cavalrymen or sawar a mansabdar was needed to keep up. For every ten cavalrymen, the mansabdar needed to keep twenty ponies. All mansabdars had a zat, or ranking, and a sawar, or a troop ranking based on their military effort. All servants of the empire, whether in the civil or military departments, were a part of this system.
