In the 16th century, Martin Luther, a popular professor at a university in Germany started to criticize the church publicly. He held the church accountable for the illegal sale of letters of indulgences. Soon, he became a target of the church and was filed for a hearing by the then king Charles V in front of a council. The council demanded for burning Luther’s writings. But some German rulers were Luther’s supporters. This entire event is known as the protestant movement. Final Answer Martin Luther opposed the church and put allegations on them, which led to him being booked for a hearing in front of the council. It was ordered that Luther’s writings be burnt, but he had gained the support of several German kings by then. This incident is known as the German protestant movement.
