The French society at that time was divided into three estates- First estate- this estate comprises clergies and the church. They are 1 percent of the population and enjoy the rights of their birth. This estate is exempted from paying taxes. Second estate- the second estate comprises nobles and other rich members. This estate has feudal privileges and is also exempted from giving taxes. These people live in chateaux. The total population of this estate is around 2 percent. Third estate- third estate covers more than 90 percent of the population in France and consists of two classes- bourgeois or intellectual middle class and peasants. This bourgeois consists of lawyers, teachers, businessmen, etc. this estate is forced to pay taxes and is levied taxes on every single material.
