Explanation Red tide and algal bloom is defined as a concept that arises due to the enrichment of nutrients and predominantly results due to massive pollution in water bodies. Algal bloom: it is defined as the phenomena where the population of algae or blue- green algae increase due to the rapid increase in nutrients. This predominantly results in the discoloration of the water body, ultimately resulting in the increase in the biological oxygen demand (BOD). Therefore, this poses a negative impact upon the marine life, resulting in the death of aquatic fishes and other animals. Red tides: This phenomenon is predominantly caused by red dinoflagellates (Gonyaulax). They tend to multiply rapidly, thereby causing the intense red coloration of the sea. They also release a large amount of toxins and hence pose a great threat to the marine life. The phenomenon of red tide gradually gives rise to algal bloom. The rapid growth and nutrient enrichment ultimately leads to the increase in the BOD of the water bodies and the mass depletion of marine life
