Differentiate between the following:- (iii) homosporous and heterosporous pteridophyte
Explanation Pteridophytes are also known as vascular cryptogams because of xylem and phloem present in them. The plant body of pteridophyte is the sporophyte. Homosporus pteridophytes: Most of the pteridophytes known to the world are homosporus i.e. they produce only one kind of spores. These spores are borne at the axil of specialized leaf like appendages called sporophylls. E.g. Psilotum. Heterosporus pteridophyte: Heterospory is the occurrence of two different types of spores in a plant. Thus we can easily say that heterosporus pteridophytes are those which produce two different types of spores. The larger spores are called megaspores and are borne at the axils of megasporophyll. The smaller spores are called microspores and are borne at the axil of microsporophylls. E.g. Selaginella, Salvinia, etc. Final Answer Homosporus pteridophytes produce only one kind of spores at the axil of leaf like appendages called sporophylls.E.g. Psilotum Heterosporus pteridophytes produce two different types of spores called megaspores and microspores at the axils of megasporophylls and microsporophylls respectively. E.g. Selaginella.
