Explanation Nature selects for fitness, and fitness means that individual or organism which has certain characteristics, which makes it different from other competitive organisms. This specific characteristics are absent in other organisms which make them unsuitable for that environment and leads to the end of that organisms. These characteristics are basically inherited in the fit individual and in case of microorganisms this characteristics arises due to mutations. Like imagine you have two types of microbial colonies in one petriplate, colony A is Antibiotic resistant colony whereas , colony B is Antibiotic sensitive, this both colonies are grown in an antibiotic containing medium, colony A will survive because of the presence of certain genes , which are absent in colony B , which make colony B unfit for survival. This is what Darwinian selection is all about. Final Answer Another way of explaining this concept is that, Some organisms have better adaptive characteristics than others and this makes them survive. These adaptive character is basically has genetic basis.
